🔥 Streak 101: How Streaks Work & How to Keep Them

All About Streaks: Progress, Icons, and Saves

Updated over a week ago

📰 Overview: What’s a Streak?

A streak in Speak tracks how many consecutive days you’ve completed a lesson. It’s a great way to stay consistent and motivated on your language learning journey.

Each day you complete at least one lesson, your streak grows — and the longer it gets, the more satisfying it feels to keep it alive!

You'll see your streak reflected across the app, including your Home screen, Profile calendar, and the updated Streak Progress screen at the end of your first lesson of the day.

🔍 What Do the Different Streak Icons Mean?

We use different icons to help you easily understand your streak status at a glance:

  1. Active Streak – You’ve completed your first lesson today — your streak is safe and growing!

  2. Not Yet Extended – You haven’t completed a lesson today yet — your streak is still at risk.

  3. Not Yet Extended, 2 Hours Left – You’re within 2 hours of losing your streak if you don’t finish a lesson soon.

  4. Save Eligible – You missed a day but are still within the 48-hour save window.

  5. Save Expiring Soon – Your save window is closing — complete two lessons now to recover your streak.

💡 How to Save Your Streak

🔥 Streak Save (classic)

If you miss a day, don’t worry — Speak gives you one chance to save your streak.

  • If it's been more than 24 hours but less than 48 hours since you last gained a streak day.

  • When eligible, your streak icon will turn blue and show a save prompt.

  • To save your streak, just complete two lessons in a day.

  • You’ll get confirmation when your streak has been successfully saved.

👉 Pro tip: The clock resets based on your local time zone, so staying consistent around the same time each day helps!

🐁 Streak 2.0 in beta

⚠️ Note: These features are in beta and may not be available to everyone yet.

We’re introducing new Streak safeguards to help protect your progress from unexpected interruptions — while still keeping streaks meaningful.

Remember! These tools are powerful but infrequent. They’re meant to help you recover from slip-ups — not replace daily practice.

⛽ Save Streak Challenge — your “last-chance” recovery

  • What is it? A special challenge offered if you’ve missed a day. Completing it will keep your streak alive. (Think of it as an upgraded version of the classic Streak Save.)

  • What’s different now? Your streak will stay alive, but only the days you’re active count toward your total streak — missed days aren’t added back.

  • When do I get it? Occasionally, after a gap of more than one day.

  • How often can I use it? Rarely — it’s designed for occasional slip-ups, not frequent breaks.

❄️ Streak Freeze — your daily safety net

  • What is it? A Streak Freeze is an automatic safety net that saves your streak if you miss a day. If you skip a day, a Streak Freeze is used automatically to protect your streak.

  • When do I get it? Earned by completing lessons (exact rules vary).

  • How many do I have? You can hold up to 2 Streak Freezes at a time.

⚡ Auto Streak Repair — rare emergency help

  • What is it? A powerful recovery tool that can repair a longer break in your streak (up to ~5 missed days in some cases).

  • When do I get it? In special situations when a major interruption happens.

  • How often can I use it? Very rarely — think of it as your “break glass in case of emergency” option.

🤔 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

When does the Streak Progress screen appear?

You'll see the updated streak screen after completing your first lesson of the day — this is when your streak gets extended.

Do all lessons count toward my streak?

Yes — as long as it's a lesson with learning content (Video, Speaking Drill, Made For You, Jump-in Lessons, etc.), it will count toward your streak.

What happens if I miss two days in a row?

Your streak will reset. But you can always start a new one — the next day you complete a lesson will start a fresh streak from day 1.

What’s the difference between Streak Save and Streak 2.0 features?

  • The classic Streak Save is available to all users and lets you save your streak within a 48-hour window by completing 2 lessons.

  • Streak 2.0 features (like Streak Freeze, Save Streak Challenge, and Auto Streak Repair) are newer safeguards currently in beta. They provide extra protection but are less frequent and may not be available to everyone yet.

Can I stack multiple saves together?

No — you can’t combine a Streak Save, Freeze, and Challenge all at once. Only one protection applies at a time.

How do I know if I have a Streak Freeze available?

You can check your Streak Freeze balance in the Streak Calendar (accessible from Home or Profile tab)

Do Streak Freezes expire?

No — once earned, they stay in your account until used. But you can only hold up to 2 at a time, so keep learning to stay stocked.

Can I earn more Streak Freezes after using them?

Yes — just keep completing lessons. The exact earning rules vary, but active learning is always the way to replenish them.

What happens if my Streak Freeze is used?

It’s applied automatically. You won’t lose your streak, but one Freeze will be consumed. If you have none left, missing another day will put your streak at risk.

Will I always get a Save Streak Challenge or Auto Streak Repair when I miss a day?

Not always. These features are designed to appear only in certain situations and aren’t guaranteed. Think of them as rare safety nets, not daily tools.

Will my streak reset if I switch devices or reinstall the app?

No — your streak is tied to your Speak account, not your device. As long as you log in with the same account, your streak will carry over.
