🏆 What are Leagues?

Updated over a week ago

📰 Overview

Leagues are a fun, competitive feature in Speak that lets you challenge yourself — and other learners — every week. By completing lessons and earning XP, you can climb through ranks, move up tiers, and celebrate your progress along the way.

Leagues are designed to keep you motivated, consistent, and engaged in your language learning journey, no matter your level.

🔍 How Leagues Work

Each week, you’ll be automatically placed into a League group of up to 30 learners who are around the same level as you. From there, everyone competes to earn the most XP from their lessons that week.

Here’s how it works:

  • Getting started:

    • New users join Leagues automatically after completing 2 lessons.

    • Existing users join after completing 1 lesson.

  • Tiers:

    • There are 10 tiers, from Iron → Challenger.

    • Everyone starts in Iron for their first League cycle.

  • Ranking:

    • Your weekly rank depends on how much XP you earn from your lessons.

  • Promotion & demotion:

    • Depending on your rank at the end of the week, you’ll either move up a tier, stay where you are, or move down to a lower tier.

You can view your current League, ranking, and progress anytime by going to Challenge → Leagues tab in the app. This tab shows:

  1. Your current leaderboard

  2. Your weekly tier and rank

  3. Information about your next promotion opportunity

⚙️ How to Disable Leagues

If Leagues is not your thing, no worries, there's an easy way to disable it:

  1. Go to Profile → Settings → Preferences

  2. Find the Leagues toggle

  3. Tap to turn it off (or back on if you want to rejoin later)

🤔 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Do Leagues affect my course progress or XP?
No — Leagues are separate from your course path. They simply use your lesson XP to rank you against others for fun and motivation. Your course progress stays the same regardless of your League status.

What does my Tier mean?
Your Tier shows your overall level in Leagues — starting from Iron and climbing all the way up to Challenger. The higher your tier, the tougher the competition becomes!

How are Leagues grouped?
You’re placed in a group with up to 30 learners who started their League around the same time and are in the same tier as you. This keeps things fair and competitive for everyone.

How are XP and ranks calculated?
XP is earned through lessons — the more you learn, the more XP you gain. Your rank updates automatically after your XP change.

What happens when a League week ends?
Your final rank determines whether you get promoted, stay, or demoted a tier. A new League cycle begins every week.

Can I see my past League results before the next cycle?
Yes — after each cycle ends, you’ll see your results screen summarizing your final rank, promotion or hold status, and XP earned.

How do promotions and demotions work in Leagues?
Each Tier has its own rules for who gets promoted, stays, or moves down at the end of the week. Check the Leagues tab anytime during the week to see how close you are to promotion — and stay motivated to finish strong!

Will I lose my progress if I disable Leagues?
No — you’ll still earn XP and continue making progress in the background. However, while Leagues is turned off, your weekly rank and tier won’t be visible in the app.
If you’re inactive compared to others, your tier may change (including possible demotion) by the time you re-enable the feature.

Can I rejoin Leagues after turning them off?
Absolutely! Just return to Profile → Settings → Preferences and toggle Leagues back on. You’ll automatically be placed into the next available cycle at your current tier.
